Transfer Blueprint: Retain or Offload #001: Manchester United
Fire-Sale at Manchester United: Who Will Make the Cut?
In this debut edition of 'Transfer Blueprint: Retain or Offload,' we delve into Manchester United's current squad, determining who they should retain and who they should offload.
Manchester United undoubtedly faces a busy summer transfer window, with reports suggesting that the club is open to offers for most of their squad.
While Erik ten Hag's future remains uncertain, the new backroom team assembled by new Owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is poised to leave its mark on the club.
Currently sitting in sixth place in the league, United have looked nowhere near the level needed to challenge for the title, and significant changes need to be made.
So, let's delve in and address the key question: which players should Manchester United retain, and which should they offload?
Andre Onana - Retain
Manchester United fans are no strangers to a new goalkeeper signing starting off on shaky ground, and Onana’s performances have been somewhat improving, with the goalkeeper providing key saves in their most recent match against Burnley.
Altay Bayindir - Retain
The backup goalkeeper has made only one appearance this season. Given his limited opportunities, there are no reasons to consider shipping him out after just one year.
Tom Heaton - Retain
As far as a third choice keeper is concerned, he has shown to be reliable in the past. He also helps fill a home-grown spot.
Diogo Dalot - Retain
Dalot has been one of the most consistent players for Manchester United this season. His availability and versatility have been invaluable, particularly in plugging holes in an injury-ravaged defense.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka - Offload
Despite being strong defensively, Wan-Bissaka has not shown significant improvement in his offensive contributions since joining in 2019. Considering the expectations upon his arrival, it is time to offload him.
Luke Shaw - Retain
When fit, Luke Shaw is amongst the best left-backs in the league. It's worth retaining him and betting on his ability to regain fitness rather than risking losing him to a rival club.
Tyrell Malacia - Offload (loan out)
Malacia has yet to feature in an official game for the club this year and hasn't shown enough potential to warrant a risk. With the club not in need of two potentially injury-prone left-backs, loaning him out could help recoup some of the investment made in him the following season.
Lisandro Martinez - Retain
Martinez was United's top defender last season and is will be their first-choice defender in the upcoming season.
Raphael Varane - Offload (out of contract)
He has been inconsistent in both availability and performances. With his contract running out in the summer, considering the wages he is on, United would be smart to offload him and invest the money elsewhere.
Victor Lindelof - Offload
While Lindelof provided adequate cover at times, he hasn't consistently performed at the required level. It's time for United to part ways with him.
Jonny Evans - Offload (out of contract)
Although Evans offered valuable cover when needed, his age and recent injury make it unnecessary for United to retain his services for another season.
Harry Maguire - Retain
Despite being a divisive figure, Maguire has arguably been United's best center-back this season. He has shown determination and resilience, and with all the other senior defenders leaving, it may be wise to keep someone who can provide an example for the new players coming. With that said, he should not be starting for them next season.
Willy Kambwala - Retain
The youngster showed some promise in the games he featured in. With United likely to compete in a European competition next season, retaining him will provide valuable experience and development opportunities.
Casemiro - Offload
Casemiro's performance this season has been a far cry from his previous form. His legs seem to be completely gone, and at 32, they would benefit from offloading his massive contract.
Sofyan Amrabat - Offload (loan expire)
Despite a standout World Cup showing, Amrabat has failed to meet expectations and has fallen short of the required standard for a top Premier League club.
Kobbie Mainoo - Retain
Mainoo has been a revelation this season, showcasing exceptional performances in midfield beyond his years. With the right defensive-minded partner, he has the potential to shine even brighter for years to come.
Scott McTominay - Offload
While McTominay has scored some crucial goals for United, he offers little aside from that. With potential interest from other clubs, United should consider cashing in on him.
Christian Eriksen - Offload
Similar to Casemiro, Eriksen has failed to replicate his previous performances and has seen limited game time. It's time for United to move on from him.
Bruno Fernandes - Retain
The captain and their most consistent performer since he arrived at the club. His consistent performances and genuine passion for the club’s results make him indispensable for United's rebuild.
Mason Mount - Retain
Despite a challenging debut season marred by injuries, Mount has shown glimpses of his talent when given the opportunity. He deserves another chance to showcase his abilities next season.
Amad Diallo - Retain
Diallo, a promising youngster, has shown glimpses of his ability despite limited game time. Given his age, United should afford him another season to develop.
Alejandro Garnacho - Retain
At just 19 years old, Garnacho has been one of the first names of every team sheet this season.
Rasmus Hojlund - Retain
Despite facing challenges in terms of service, Hojlund has demonstrated resilience and a strong desire to play for the club. Has room to grow as a finisher, but will be United’s starting striker for next season.
Jadon Sancho - Offload
There has been too much drama around Jadon Sancho to see any way that he can stay at the club, even under a new manager. United will hope he can string some good performances at Dortmund to attract potential suitors.
Mason Greenwood - Offload
There would be too much backlash if Greenwood were to have any future at United. With him performing well at Getafe this season, United will hope to be able to get a decent fee for him.
Marcus Rashford - Offload
On raw talent alone, Rashford may be the most talented player at United. However, after a very lackluster season, both on, and off, the pitch, it may be time for both parties to part ways. The list of potential suitors would definitely be a short one, but if the right offers comes in, United should look to let him go.
Antony - Retain (unless Rashford stays)
While Antony has yet to justify his hefty price tag, his familiarity with Ten Hag's system could prove beneficial for United. Keeping either him or Rashford as a backup option for the coming season would be a wise move.
Antony Martial - Offload (out of contract)
Martial's time at United has been marred by injuries, and his performances have often been subject to ridicule by opposing fans, particularly regarding the Ballon d'Or clause in his initial transfer. Given his contract situation and inconsistent form, offloading him would be a logical decision for the club.
